Zebra mussels like carp both are invasive species. Hard to control once established. My sense there are more water quality problems in the reservior than we understand. We will study the problem, baseline data, and hope the next generation takes corrective action...

Unfortunately Asian carp may not be the answer. Just look at what the big head and silver carp, brought to this country in the early 80s to eat algae in farm ponds have done. They have escaped and moving up the Mississippi River destroying eco-systems, and are now threatening the Great Lakes. We need to have a holistic approach and remember Mother Nature will have the last say...

I noticed fresh Bass dead and dying. Fingerlings to 5lbs. Fat, bass, seemed they ate the dead shad and died possibly. Fingerlings just looked like the shad, but where more fresh. This was on 3/20/10 - Saturday. Large bass was dying, saw an old large dead bass too.
Sad.

I live in a county where phosphate detergent is outlawed.

Using a brand from Trader Joes, and another from Costco, it took less than a month for the inside of the dishwasher to turn black.

1 week with some Gel from the next county and it looked new again.

This stuff does not work.

There are many things growing in the water. I noticed last year a new brown grass growing quickly, it can be seen floating near the top. As a very small patch beginning last year, has spread from one side of the canal inlet between our neighbor and us - what is it? It isn't the normal 'green' weed that's been growing for years. This is very invasive

I just read more on this - what I am seeing is more like a weed, or grass under water and floats just near the surface - what is this? It looks like the weed you would put in the bottom of a fish tank, but its brown

I've been watching the new growth in our cove since last year. It started out as a small patch and consistently grew larger over the summer 2008- it has returned early spring and is spreading even farther out towards the lake, the cove and our boat dock area - I am really worried about this eventually taking over - is this the algae we are watching ?

Hi Wendy, I have been using a phosphate free dishwashing detergent (as well as laundry detergent) for about a year. I absolutely love it so much I use it to clean my toilets! No need for jet dry either! One bottle lasts us almost 2 months, and is much cheaper than 7th generation. We use about as much as the size of a dime on well water. Works excellant with hard water! Not only does it get our dishes clean, it doesn't leave that slimey residue that I didn't realize that Cascade even left on my dishes until it wasn't there. One of my biggest concerns with the Big Brand Name detergents is that it was literally pumping poisons into our breathing air (right at the level of my toddlers who love to hang out during the dry cycle!). Since our switch, our children are not constantly having runny noses and other "cold like symptoms". More info needed? see www.solutionsolver.healthyhometour.com or leave an email at solutionsolver@mypowermail.net and someone will contact you back! Good luck on your adventure and thank you for supporting the environment for all our families! D.J. Quick
