‘Trashmeister’ Visits Indian Creek, Kicks Off Recycling Unit

trash meister 007 When walking into school this morning, students couldn’t help but notice that their hallway was literally “trashed” with plastic bottles, wrappers, and scraps of paper.  The students in third grade were called together to find out who was responsible for this mess.  The source was identified…it was the Trashmeister!  The legend of the Trashmeister is that he was once a student here and did not listen to his teachers about the importance of recycling, and therefore, ended up living in filth and trash.

This hook activity was the beginning of the recycling learning unit that continues for the next two months.  Students have taken on the school-wide initiative of encouraging other students to bring in newspapers and to recycle bottles and cans.  The kids in one class is even doing chores at home to raise money to offset the cost of the recycling expense for the school (the recycling used to be donated by a company but has now begun charging for this service.)  The idea of recycling continues at home as students learn about waste, what is sent to the landfills, and what they can do to help make our nation “GREEN.”
