The Lawrence Central boys swim team put on a sectional performance that was hard for even their coach to believe.
“Every swimmer had their best time at every swim at the meet,” said Coach Andy Renie, who was named Coach of the Year at the event held at Carmel High School Feb. 17.
It was the first time Renie has seen that happen in his 17 years of coaching, and he doubts he’ll ever see it again. Usually someone has a bad day.
“Every kid dropped time,” Renie said. “It was phenomenal.”
He says he received Coach of the Year (his second in a row) because of the unbelievable performance of his kids. Of course, several LC swimming records were also broken that day, and the performance qualified the team for state-level competition.
Drew Avery broke school records for the 200 and 100-meter freestyle; Kyle Tiemann broke the 500 free; and Eric Ahearn broke the 100 backstroke record. Since all three are underclassmen, Renie is excited about the leadership they will provide to next year’s team.
Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern captured its first-ever boys swimming state title Feb. 24 at the IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals at the IUPUI Natatorium.
