The “I Love to Read Challenge” honored Melissa Bock’s second grade class from Fishers Elementary and teacher Annette Probst from Sand Creek Intermediate at its awards ceremony April 16 at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. First Lady Cheri Daniels recognized winners of the program sponsored by WISHTV Channel 8.
Classrooms across the state averaging at least 1,000 minutes of non-textbook reading per student between Jan. 8 and March 2 were eligible for the class grand prize drawing. One qualifying classroom per grade was selected through a random drawing to win a check for use for supplies, field trips, class rewards or other needs. Bock’s classroom was the second grade classroom drawn. The program also recognized individual students who read over 2,500 minutes.
In addition, Sand Creek Intermediate’s Probst was selected from 36 nominated teachers as Most Creative Teacher for her strategies to get students to participate. She received a $500 prize. One of her students has a grandmother who runs an orphanage in Kenya. This orphanage houses approximately 60 children, and they are in need of basic school supplies to teach them how to read.
“We wanted to use the I Love to Read challenge to help others learn how to read.” Her class collected school supplies to help in the teaching of reading and opened the lines of communication with correspondence between students here and there. She said their goal is to “help others develop the reading skills for a successful life.”
