By Misha Wee — The Lawrence North Key Club is ready to “Spring into Health” and hopes to get others involved as well. The community service club is organizing a spring community health fair that will be held on April 12 to promote wellness in Lawrence Township.
“I believe that it’s a great opportunity for not only the club, but the community,” said junior Allison Kipper, bulletin editor of Key Club, who is in charge of recreation and entertainment for the fair. Key Club received a grant from the United Way through its Youth as Resources program. Youth as Resources is an organization that offers grants to youth ages 5 to 21 who are aspiring to make a difference in their community. The Lawrence North Key Club received a grant of $3,250, which will help fund “Spring into Health.”
“It will help fund the fair, plus provide publicity for the Lawrence North Key Club,” said junior David Langdon, president of Key Club. Langdon, as well as some other Key Club members, applied for the grant. “There was a group of about four of us that applied, and we attended a screening process where we were interviewed,” said Langdon. “They notified us that we had been awarded a grant, and we went to receive it. We got a big check. It was cool.”
The fair will be beneficial to the community, as well as Lawrence North. “Our spring community health fair is an opportunity for residents of Lawrence Township to come to Lawrence North and learn how to make healthy lifestyles, make healthy meals, make healthy choices, and, if they want to, they can help the community’s health by donating blood,” said Dee Anne Sinclair, Key Club’s adviser.
“Spring into Health” is not all about donating blood, however. Entertainment and food are just a few of the options that the fair offers. “There are going to be several fun and entertaining activities such as basketball and football,” said Kipper.
“Spring into Health” will encourage health to the community through information and free health tests. “It will encourage people who can’t afford health care to find out about how to stay healthy,” said Langdon.
Co-chairs senior Sydney Jiang and Langdon head the board for the health fair. Also on the board is a group of members to help with the fair called subcommittees. They are Kipper, senior Deepa Saha, senior Neira Eisenmann, senior Jordan Masopust and junior Emily Myers.
“This will give our club members an opportunity to plan and implement a very large service project for the community,” said Sinclair.
