Twenty years ago a group of Geist-area residents led by Pastor Ron Voss joined together to form a church that was service oriented and servant focused. Those beginnings are being celebrated on April 26 at a special anniversary worship service at 9 a.m., where members of Servants of Christ Lutheran Church will remember the last 20 years and look forward to the future.
Visitors are invited to join in the celebration on April 26th and are always welcome at any other church worship service or fellowship activities.
The church, located at 7650 Oaklandon Road, was formally organized April 30, 1989, while worship services took place at Westminster Village North, 63rd Street and Sunnyside Road. Construction began on the church building in April 1990, with dedication on April 21, 1991. In the fall of 1996, the sanctuary was expanded, and an education and music wing was added to accommodate the growing congregation.
Servants of Christ is a word-grounded, Christ-centered, mission-minded congregation of believers. Along with its strong mission of service and support to its neighbors near and far, the church has vibrant music and youth programs. These include not only a voice choir, but handbell and chime choirs for all ages. Sunday morning services usually have one of the choirs offering musical praise, with occasional music from instruments such as trumpets, violins, cellos, guitars and drums. Children’s church, which takes place during the pastor’s sermon each Sunday, provides youngsters an echo of the adult lessons in a child-appropriate manner with songs and crafts. Middle school and high school teens are kept busy with numerous fun activities such as serving in mission projects both in Indiana and regionally, attending camps and Christian youth concerts and conferences.
