Movin’ and Groovin’ at Holy Cross Lutheran School

Laura Brisben Holy Cross Lutheran School students have spent the year not only learning but staying active. The elementary students (including kindergarten) have P.E. twice a week. The kids are learning that staying active can also be fun as teacher Julie Heideman has been working hard creating some awesome units.

During the recent Winter Olympics, the students competed in “ice skating, snow-skiing, and bob-sledding” during class. The children also completed “Dr. Seuss” physical activities on the author’s recent birthday! Most recently, Mrs. Heideman has challenged her students to take the “President’s Challenge.”

This requires the students to track their physical activity with a goal of at least 60 minutes a day, five days out of the week, for at least six of the next eight weeks.

The students of Holy Cross, including the pre-school students, have also begun a new program called “Minds in Motion” this
year. Rooms are designated to provide students with extra movement.

This program also helps younger students and early readers to help stimulate messages between the four quadrants of the brain.

The Dad’s Club has also done their part in helping to get the kids interested in sports and staying active. In October, they held a basketball camp for grades k-4. The Dad’s Club followed this up with a soccer camp in February. There were approximately 50 kids at each camp. The kids had a great time and learned many skills. In addition, staff members Meredith Bowes and Laura Brisben, began a running club in November. The runners meet each Tuesday after school and will continue to do so until the end of the school year. It is a young group with 1st – 4th graders making up the club. However, the kids and their parents are going to compete in the Geist 5K this spring. The children are slowing trying to build up their endurance to run/walk the 3.1 mile event. Holy Cross recently learned they have been awarded a $2,000 Health & Wellness Grant from the Geist 5K. This money will be going toward buying equipment for helping keep our kids healthy.

Between the P.E. classes, running club, and sports camps, there are many things the school plans to purchase with the goal outcome of encouraging lifetime habits of being fit and active. This will also help in creating a better academic
environment for all.
