The Lawrence North High School student newspaper, The North Star, won six awards in the 2008 Woman’s Press Club of Indiana High School Journalism Contest.

The newspaper won three first place and three third place awards. Junior Nicole Burts won first place in the news writing category with her story following a day in the life of a janitor. Senior Allie Renkert won a first place in the feature photo category for her photo of the LNHS marching band. Senior Meredith Dover won a first place award in the double-truck layout category for her feature page design of “The Race for Equality.”

Third place awards went to Senior Brian Karski in the sports writing category for his coverage of pre-season conditioning. Junior Alex Girvin won in the sports photo category for his cross-country photo of state qualifier Alex Daugherty. Finally, juniors Kelsey Olson and Katharine Rinker won in the review writing category for their review of Paradise Café.

First place winners go on to the national level of competition with the National Federation of Press Women. Results from that contest will be announced this summer.
