There is good news in the search for a cancer cure: Cancer death rates have fallen for the third straight year, according to the American Cancer Society. This means progress is being made in the fight against cancer –- progress you can be a part of through your local Relay For Life event.
“Being a part of Relay For Life is a personal journey, not just for me but for all the participants,” stated Vickie Guy, chairperson for Relay For Life of Fortville/Geist/McCordsville. “Cancer touches everyone in some way. By participating in Relay, we are not only raising funds for research and patient programs, but we are also supporting and honoring all cancer survivors and remembering those who have lost their battle, and vowing to continue to carry on the fight against cancer until no one has to hear the words ;you have cancer.’”
The 2nd Annual Relay For Life of Fortville/Geist/McCordsville is scheduled to take place June 12th-13th at McCordsville Elementary School.
“Relay For Life offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer, and we want to encourage everyone to get their team together. Teams are often made up of co-workers, friends and family members. Many businesses, schools, organizations and religious groups also build teams. We are looking for as much participation in the communities as possible!” stated Jenny Boling, event organizer for the American Cancer Society.
Leading up to the Relay event, team members raise dollars by fundraising and securing sponsorships. During Relay, teams camp out overnight and take turns walking a track in an effort to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.
The event planning committee is still in need of committee members and teams for the 2009 event. If you are interested in being a committee member or team captain, please contact Community Representative Jenny Boling at the American Cancer Society. To join a team, log on to www.relayforlife.org/geistin. If you are not able to join a team, you may log on to make a donation.
