Holy Cross Lutheran Church Opens New Education Center

Holy Cross Lutheran Church celebrated the opening of its new Education Center on January 25th. Nearly 400 people were on hand for the opening ceremony, including Mayor Paul Ricketts. Representatives from builder Pepper Construction were praised for having the project completed on time and under the church’s budget of just under $3 million.

Olympic diver Thomas Finchum spoke of the role of Lutheran education in his success in athletics. Finchum was named 2007 USA Diving Athlete of the Year and participated in the 2008 Olympics.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, a reception was held in the new building. Families explored the new education center while enjoying food and entertainment by singer-songwriter Don Wharton.

Holy Cross Lutheran Day school had a humble beginning as a small preschool in 1991. Since that time, enrollment has increased so dramatically that the school began to outgrow its space. The acquisition of land adjacent to the church property set the ball in motion to give the school much needed space to expand.

“The building essentially doubles the amount of space we have, adding 16,000 square feet. This includes six classrooms, an Activity Center (gymnasium) and all the support space. It is just the first phase of a multi-phase building that will eventually include 24 classrooms, allowing two of all grade levels through 8^th grade,” said Pastor John Sattler.

The welcome addition of the gymnasium appeals most to the students. “My favorite part of the new building is our gym. We have so much fun playing there,” says 2^nd grade student Reagan Woodruff.

Holy Cross Lutheran Day School is now the only Lutheran elementary school on the north side of Indianapolis. Next year, Holy Cross will be educating students from preschool to 4^th grade. Each subsequent year, another grade will be added until the school reaches eighth grade.
