As graduation invitations start arriving, they bring with them the dilemma of how to pick a unique gift that will be truly appreciated instead of tossed aside.
“When I graduated high school, I got my grandfather’s car. I think it was a Chrysler Newport. The springs were rusting through the trunk, but I loved that car,” says Geist resident Kevin O’Connell.
AtGeist Publisher Tom Britt bought his daughter a laptop when she graduated from Bishop Chatard, and it was the “best gift ever.” It was a step up from the typewriter he got as a graduation gift, and, “Yes, it was electric by the way,” he adds.
If you can’t afford a car or a computer, some Geist business owners have a few ideas that are sure to make your gift stand out.
“I think surprising a friend or family member with a painting of their pet is a unique gift and a keepsake,” said Geist artist Karen Seltzer (www.karenseltzer.com). “I’ve had clients order paintings for their (graduating) children, who miss their pets after going off to college. The painting can immortalize one’s memories and special times that they’ve had with their pet.”
Sanjay Patel, owner of the Frame It All store on E. 96th St., suggests a nicely framed graduation photo or diploma to immortalize the accomplishment. You also can have mementos and awards framed up to create a shadowbox of memories, complete with cords and tassels, athletic letters, recognition pins, medals and ribbons.
At Yaprak’s Geist Boutique, you can find all the latest fashions for the graduate, and you can also find some great bags. “We have big carry-all type bags, so you can take your stuff off to college in style!” says Yaprak.
From the “Graduate Line” at Delaney’s (Fox and Oaklandon roads), there are tote bags, memo pads, luggage tags and small pillows that can be personalized for an additional cost. One fun item for the gal grad on your list is a slip–on bath towel/robe ($42) that also can be personalized. No more mistaken towel identity in the dorm bathrooms! Pair that with some personalized soap, and you’ve got a gift to go!
For the guy grad, there’s a silver money clip ($18) that can be personalized, too, along with some tools and golf accessories.
We’ve all heard that “Life is a Journey,” and now your grad can wear it on their wrist with a life band from Gallery 116 in Fishers. There are also bracelets and necklaces with reaffirming life phrases ($40 and up), bubble necklaces that can sport any initial under the glass ($25+), and “mood” bracelets–something that was popular before their time!
For the eco savvy grad on your list, how about a messager bag for guys and gals made from recycled billboards ($85) and matching notebook covers ($16). And you can’t get much greener than carrying a bag/purse made from recycled leather coats (&130). There’s just something about being green and fashionable, too! (Meet the artists behind the recycled message bags, notebook covers and purses at a Gallery 116 Trunk showing April 18th from 11-3pm).
As always, if you can’t find the right gift…offer some cash. Or package a gift card in a handmade gift card holder from Gallery 116 (3 for $3.20) . Life may be a journey, but it’s certainly nice to start out with a little dough in your pocket!
