Geist Water Rescue

This algae always runs rampant during the heat of the summer.  This year’s drought is increasing the risks.  It can make drinking water unpleasant.  Some of the hardest water in the state is located in Geist, Fishers, and Westfield areas.  The hard water is due to more limestone in the soil.  White River cannot be navigated because of limestone.  The river received its name because on a sunny day the limestone appears white from the sky.  The limestone is what causes little rocks and settlement to end up in your washing machine, water heater, etc.

Soil testing is really important in knowing what products will improve the soil for your lawn care and gardening needs.  High ph or alkaline (sterile) soil is caused from environmental pollutants which rob the soil of healthy microbes.  This causes bacteria in the soil.  After a good rain, the soil absorbs much of the rainwater and acts as a filter.  All synthetic lawn product or non-organic gardening fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides end up in our lakes, ponds, etc.

Asphalt can actually leach toxins into the soil.  On hot summer days you can actually smell the chemicals burning from the asphalt.  Newer product is recommended for water runoff.  The State Fair has an exhibit that includes permeable-concrete structures and paths.  This exhibit is called Pathway to Water Quality.

The 2010 Imperative which addressed mayors across the nation stated that global warming will affect Indiana locally with more torrential downpour rains.  These downpours will create more runoff into our waterways because it is harder for the soil to quickly absorb and filter the rainwater.

Pat Lacey attended Harvard University where students watched an on-site dredging at a cemetery utilizing organic fibers.  The dredging was performed because the herbicide and pesticide chemical runoff leached into the cemetery pond.  This pastoral cemetery is well-known for their beautiful trees, shrubs, and flowers.  Studies included brownfield projects.  A brownfield is a former industrial or commercial site where future use is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination.
