I was just 6yo when the blizzard of 78 hit. I was old enough to remember previous winters but this is the only one that sticks in my mind now from that long ago. It set in my mind what winter was supposed to be. Of course we havent seen snow like that since so I was always disappointed every year afterwards growing up. Now that Im almost 40 I guess I wouldnt care to see so much snow. But I do wish my kids could have seen what I seen. It was amazing. Snow so deep and being so young made it seem even deeper... It was truly a magical time in my life.

I was 8 1/2 months pregnant and praying I would not go early and require a helicopter or snowmobile trip to the hospital. I delivered safely two weeks later and then we moved to Texas in 1980. The amazing thing is we moved to leave cold, blizzardy weather and Waco received it's largest snowfall in many years our first winter there (January 1981), after many folks stated we would love the warmer Texas winters and even wear t-shirts at times!

I'll bet that was a lot of fun. Today they would blame that on global warming. God I miss the 70's!

I think the Blizzard of 78 was one the most interesting experiences of my life. I was 13 years old in 1978. I wonder what the odds of having another blizzard in my lifetime are. The reoccuring theme of the Blizzard is that of neighbors helping neighbors and the fact that the world seem to stop. Many people are chasing "things" that are really not that important. We were put on this earth to fellowship and help one another. It is a shame that it takes a disaster for us to come together. Does anyone have any pictures to post? I would like to show them to my kids. If we were to have another Blizzard, I do not think it would appear to be as bad as 1978 because most of the fences that used to line all of the country roads have been removed. The drift fences are gone! The Blizzard of 2009?????

We also made snow forts along the bank of the frozen Highland Springs lake--blocks away from Geist. As HSE students we filled our snow days with outside activities. Our parents also worried that we would be burried alive. Our tunnels seemed to be as big as multi-dwelling apartments.

I was 8 years old, and remember the blizzard well. My folks owned a 3 story home, and we climbed the TV Antenna Tower in back so we could sled off the roof! I shoveled driveways with my friends and made quite a bit of money (for an 8 yr old). We made 'forts' in every snow pile we could find. In hindsight, it's a wonder we weren't buried alive. My folks checked on all of the elderly folks in the neighborhood, and we made many friends. We made the best of a bad situation, I guess.

I remember the blizzard of 78 very well. My dad also worked for the highway department. He couldn't get home for three days. The thing I loved most about this storm was it did make people stop and appreciate all that is important, because you couldnt drive anywhere , the cars were buried. I lived in Durbin at the time across from the elementary school, this was the year they put all students on a bus no matter how close they lived. I was trying to get to school and fell, a bus almost ran over me. THe bus driver stopped got out and put me on her bus. We went straight into the principles office, she told him from now on I am picking her up I will not allow her to climb these drifts and possibly get hit. I also remember friends of our bringing there snomobiles down and getting grocery lists, we each got one bag of food. THey drove there snomobiles five miles into town so we could eat. THe year that neighbors helped neighbors, and fond memories were made.
