Free Faith-Based HEALTHY Women Conference

Hoosier women will be inspired and educated to maintain better care of mind, body and spirit at the free, faith-based HEALTHYwomen conference Saturday, Oct. 11. All women wishing to develop a healthier well-being are invited to join this first-time event, taking place at the Gathertorium at Martin University in Indianapolis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (early bird health screenings begin at 9 a.m.). The public may register for the conference by calling (317) 630-2831 or online at www.MDwise.org/healthywomen.

MDwise, a not-for-profit Managed Care Organization (MCO), is introducing the HEALTHYwomen conference to give women the opportunity to better their health through free health screenings, interactive workshops and spiritual inspiration.

“We’re looking forward to supplying women with the tools and resources they need to maintain good health,” said Laurie Weinzapfel, director of outreach and customer service for MDwise. “Since women are often the primary caregivers in a home, it’s important that they take good care of themselves as well as caring for their family members.”

A number of inspirational presenters will explore a variety of topics to give attendees a well-balanced experience.
Keynote speaker Rev. Natalie McClendon-Obie, the assistant pastor at Breeding Tabernacle C.M.E Church, will enlighten attendees about the ways in which maintaining the well-being of one’s spirit can lead to better physical and emotional health. (Presentation includes free lunch.)

Rev. Elaine P. Walters is a nationally known preacher, author, speaker and teacher who will lead attendees through an engaging workshop about the relationships between spirituality and healthy lifestyles.

Guadalupe Lewis-Kelle, LPN, will discuss an organization she founded to promote healthier lifestyles among the Hispanic community – Latino Action League.
JJ, radio host for Hot 96.3 radio in Indianapolis, will focus on teen issues in an interactive workshop in which decision-making and problem-solving skills will be addressed, as well as self-esteem, peer pressure and risky behavior.

Laurie M. Jones of MOMENTIVE® will teach money management skills to attendees through hands-on exercises about stretching your dollar, the importance of good credit and living within your means.

State Representative Carolene R. Mays, and publisher and president of “The Indianapolis Recorder,” will discuss the need for stopping domestic violence and how to do so through faith-based principles.

Vivian Finnell, First Lady of Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Assembly, will host a parenting workshop focusing on paying attention, being observant and listening to your child’s needs.

In collaboration with Marion County Health Department, the following health screenings will be provided at the conference: blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, smoking cessation and more. Various community organizations will also be present to provide information about healthy lifestyles and supportive services. The Martin University Gathertorium is located at 2171 Avondale Place.
