Indianapolis (46256), McCordsville (46050), and Fortville (46040) zip codes could change if Fishers' request is granted.
Postal officials confirmed today that the Town of Fishers has formally requested that the United States Postal Service (USPS) change the zip codes of the soon-to-be-annexed Geist homes. As of January 1, 2010, the 2,000 plus homes in the unincorporated areas of Fall Creek Township will officially be within the Town of Fishers after a four-year legal battle.
“The Town of Fishers has submitted a request to change all the zip codes within their town limits to 46037,” said Kim Yates, a spokesperson for the postal service.
Currently, the unincorporated areas affected include McCordsville (46055), Fortville (46040), and even Indianapolis (46256) zip codes around Geist Reservoir. If the change is made, all addresses would change to Fishers and would most likely share the 46037 zip code.
The process of changing zip codes is time consuming and includes the input of the residents affected.
1. The USPS District Office will study the impacts of the change, including the work load of each post office affected. They then render a decision as to whether to grant or deny the request.
2. If granted, a survey letter will be sent to each impacted postal customer requesting a “yes” or “no” vote.
3. If the majority of households want the change, the change will be granted. If not, the zip codes stay the same.
“The process is fairly democratic,” added Yates. “Residents do have a say in the outcome.”
A simple majority of respondents will determine the result of the entire area.
“If we only receive 50 surveys out of 2,000 mailed out and 26 of them are against the change, the request will be denied.”

JEEZ!! Why can't the "wonderful" Fisher's Town Council concentrate on important things…like curbing it's expenditures, balancing its budget, developing businesses in the area, etc. We don't need them screwing with OUR postal addresses. These long-armed bandits haven't "taken" enough of our time, land, resources, MONEY!!!! …Of course, …I'm sure they only want the best for us,….yeah, ..right! ….I'm sure there is a hidden agenda. Please! Vote NO.
“The process is fairly democratic,”
…democratic like the Forced Annexation?
HI. I am one of the Postal employees affected by this and I would just like to thank you for opposing this proposal. I appreciate the NO vote on this and agree that there are more important issues that these town officials could be concentrating their efforts towards. Thanks again.
How can their post office (ie Fishers) serve my and my neighbors interests better when they are ten miles away and the Fortville post office and 2 miles down the road. I have had a Fortville post office box for fifty years and resent the fact that the "democratic process" will force the change in my address. It is nothing but a money grab by Fishers!! When are they going to realize that not everyone wants to live in or be a part of Fishers.
I agree with all the postings opposing the address changes, especially those of rcltn and Derek Cowburn. Fishers doesn't understand democracy and the council is so full of itself that it thinks all their proposals will be loved and embraced by everyone and can't understand why anyone would have a different opinion. They really make me sick. The last thing I want is a Fishers address. Given the political tactics of that town, I would be ashamed to give that out as my address. They have forever damaged their reputation and all their residents should be outraged at them. (If you can't tell, I don't consider myself to be part of that town and probably never will, even though they will be pulling money out of my pocket for no valid reason other than their greed.)
