Don’t believe it when they say men never listen. Fishers resident Tony Corpuz was certainly listening when his girlfriend, Mary Turner, also of Fishers, mentioned she’d like to go to a pumpkin patch this fall. He listened and remembered, and decided a pumpkin patch would be the perfect place for a surprise marriage proposal.
Corpuz and Turner visited Stonycreek Farm Nursery and Landscaping on the opening day of the 37th Annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival September 26. Corpuz had already let Stonycreek Farm’s owner, Loren Schmierer, in on his plans.
The couple, who met when they were new students at Ball State University, has been dating for about four years. Corpuz and Turner have previously talked of getting married but he wanted to surprise her with a proposal. After visiting the Stonycreek Farm petting area, taking in the sites and a hayride to the pumpkin patch, Corpuz inconspicuously directed Turner to a particular pumpkin, which secretly held an engagement ring inside. A calm and collected Corpuz took Turner by the hand and got on bended knee.
“I can’t even really remember what I said to her,” Corpuz said laughing. “In fact, I’m not even sure she said yes! She put the ring on so I guess that means yes!”
The two haven’t set a date for the wedding yet but believe it will take place in the summer or fall of 2010. Turner, who is a teacher, said she plans on taking her class on a fieldtrip to Stonycreek Farm next week. Corpuz, also impressed with the festival, said he missed out on the giant Jumping Pillow.
“With this ring in my pocket, I didn’t want to take a chance on loosing it,” he said. “But I would love to go back and try the Jumping Pillow. Stonycreek Farm is definitely a site to see, and now it holds special memories for us.”
