Fishers is among 40 Cities Nationwide Hosting ‘CHINA Town Hall’ Discussion

In this year of presidential and Congressional elections, the role of China, and its effect on the lives of every American, has a central place in discussions of U.S. foreign policy. CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections is a nationwide event being conducted at 40 sites across the country including Fishers. It will provide a unique opportunity for area residents to learn about the importance of China’s relationship with the United States and to have questions answered by leading China specialists. The free program will be Thursday, April 17, at Hamilton Southeastern High School in the Leonard Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m.CHINA Town Hall will feature noted political analyst Norman J. Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute discussing, via live webcast, how China figures as an issue in the 2008 presidential and Congressional elections. He will then respond to questions from audience members throughout the country in a conversation moderated by Stephen A. Orlins, president of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. Following the national portion of the program, each venue will have an on-site China specialist who will address related topics of particular interest to the local community.

In collaboration with Hamilton Southeastern Schools and the Fishers Chamber of Commerce, the Fishers program will feature Dr. Heidi Ross, professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and East Asian Studies at Indiana University. She will talk about the Chinese educational system and what we can learn from it as well as China’s role in the global economy.

“An opportunity for Fishers to host a China Town Hall was presented to me from my work as a Fulbright Scholar and my 2007 visit to China,” said Dr. Flora Reichanadter, HSE elementary curriculum director. “When I was approached to be one of 40 national hosts, I felt this program would be a great partnership opportunity for the HSE Schools and the Fishers Chamber of Commerce. HSE’s goal to be a 21st century school and the great changes taking place in the global economy make a conversation about China a timely topic.”

“Developments in China, and America’s response to these developments, have a direct impact on the lives of just about everyone in the United States. Yet this campaign has not offered Americans the opportunity to discuss China, and what U.S. policy should be,” said Stephen A. Orlins, president of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. “CHINA Town Hall is designed to give Americans the opportunity to discuss these issues with America’s leading experts.”

The National Committee on United States-China Relations is the leading national, non-partisan public affairs organization devoted exclusively to building constructive and durable relationships between the United States and China. The Committee’s continuity of experience and depth of associations in Greater China and the United States make it a national resource. The Committee creates opportunities for informed discussion and reasoned debate about the issues of common interest and concern to the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan.
