Fire features can add tremendous value to your outdoor space. They have several benefits. As one of the five elements, fire creates emotional and physical warmth and creates a striking display that will enhance your space.
There are several ways you may incorporate fire into your backyard. Natural gas makes the most sense, assuming you have that service. Most landscape or hardscape contractors can connect to your existing natural gas meter and run a line to a fire pit or outdoor fireplace. Most fire features are more affordable than one might think. A homeowner can expect to spend around $2,500 -$4,000 for a fire pit and $7,000- $20,000 on a fireplace. There are also propane gas options available to those who may not have natural gas service.
There are many advantages to either natural or propane gas fire pits. They are safe. Most will be installed with an on/off and flame height adjustment valve. None of your visiting guests will smell of smoke. And, there will be no fuss with wood, starting and extinguishing. However, for those who love that smell and the crackling of wood, I would recommend a gas log starter. Keep in mind the smoke concerns do not apply to fireplaces. They have a flue for ventilation.
Fireplaces also serve as an anchor, defining an outdoor space. With careful design, homeowners can enjoy a fire feature that kindles romance one night and ignites spirited camaraderie the next. On a practical level, fire does much more. Because it provides warmth and light, the addition of a fire in the landscape extends use of the yard into the night and into the cooler seasons of the year. Fire features allow homeowners to get much more use out of the outdoor spaces they love.
