Casting for Recovery Event at Allisonville Nursery to Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Survivors’ Retreat

Allisonville Nursery is hosting a “Healthy Living Day” on April 12th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The event will include an outreach table for the non-profit organization Casting for Recovery, where women who are breast cancer survivors may sign up for a chance to attend the Indiana 2008 Casting for Recovery Retreat at no cost to them.  There will also be silent auction items and other items for sale that day to raise money for the 2008 Casting for Recovery retreat.

CFR provides weekend fly-fishing retreats at locations around the United States for women who have or have had breast cancer at no cost to participants.  The organization provides an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a beautiful, natural setting, meet new friends and have fun.  The 2 ½ day weekend retreat incorporates counseling, educational services and learning the sport of fly-fishing, a “sport for life,” to promote mental and physical healing.  As many have said, it’s not about the fishing; it’s about forming new friendships and connecting with others.

“I was one of the fortunate 14 survivors that attended the 2006 retreat,” said Debra Hire, who is organizing the Allisonville Nursery fundraiser. “It was an overwhelming experience; many of the gals were still in treatment. This was my first time with a group of ladies with the same diagnosis. We went there as 14 strangers and now were sisters. My mission is for every breast cancer survivor an opportunity to attend this retreat.”

Since the CFR program originated in 1996, over 160 retreats have been held, serving more than 2,000 breast cancer survivors.  Last year, 500 women attended one of the 35 programs and nearly the same number of women was put on a waiting list.  Retreats have been held across the United States in 23 states, including Indiana.  The Indiana CFR program began in 2005, and this year will mark the fourth retreat for Indiana women who are breast cancer survivors on September 12-14, at Wooded Glen Retreat and Conference Center in Henryville, Ind.  Our goal is to continue the CFR program in Indiana and to expand the program to two retreats per year.

Because the retreat is at no cost to the participants, Indiana volunteers work hard throughout the year to raise funds.

The Indiana Casting for Recovery team is all-volunteer, and all money collected will go directly to support the Indiana 2008 retreat.  A portion of the cost of the retreat is covered by the Indianapolis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen; the remainder is raised through events such as these.

“CFR is such a unique program, and we have such a wonderful team of volunteers and past participants who are making all this happen,” Hire said. “I think it’s an amazing story of what a grass roots effort can do.”
