‘Cans 4 Kids’ Food Drive to Benefit Local Food Pantries on Halloween Night

Jason

Jason Highley will be out on Halloween night starting a "Cans 4 Candy" drive to benefit a local food pantry.

Halloween night will mean a little more to 15-year-old Jason Highley of Cambridge at Geist this year. After watching a television program one evening, Jason decided that instead of trick-or-treating for candy this year, he was going to trick-or-treat for canned goods for the new food pantry within the Fall Creek Township offices.

“I just thought it was a great idea,” said Mary Highley, Jason’s proud mother. “What a better way to give back to the community while doing something fun.”

Jason read the article in the September Geist Community Newsletter about the new food pantry and decided to collect canned goods, non-perishable food items, toiletries, and clothing on Halloween night in lieu of candy. His campaign, named by the atGeist and atCarmel editorial staff over a breakfast meeting in Fishers, is called “Cans 4 Kids.”

“A lot of teens are a little old to be trick-or-treating for candy, but they still enjoy going out with their friends. This is a fun alternative for them and it helps stock some of our local pantries,” Mary added.

Lori McDonough, an atCarmel.com illustrator, developed the logo for the program. Participating families are encouraged to download and print out the logo and wear it as a lanyard or show it to homeowners while collecting items for the needy. It is suggested that a recyclable shopping bag or other reinforced bag is used since canned goods are much heavier than candy.
