There is an old truth that says: You can only succeed in doing what you love to do. It was quite easy for David Darga to determine the kind of business he wanted to pursue after leaving a research and development chef position in the corporate world.
The solution emerged from Darga’s family’s love of gourmet coffee. This love and his experience culminated in the winning combination that gave birth to the Harvest Café Coffee Roasters, LLC.
Harvest Café carries one of the largest selections of coffees and whole leaf teas in Indy. Located near the intersection of Binford Blvd. and 65th Street, it carries a whopping 28 flavored coffee varieties, from vanilla to tiramisu to chocolate raspberry and snickerdoodle; 27 varieties of whole leaf gourmet teas, such as Tropical Green, Blueberry Strawberry White, and Casablanca Earl Grey. And, of course, there are a number of organic and Fair Trade coffees and teas.
What makes Harvest Café coffee so special? “Freshness and quality of the product set us apart,” says David. Harvest Café selects only the very finest green coffee beans from all over the world, and tries to find as many organic and Fair Trade coffees and teas as possible. They roast the coffee to make it really smooth and creamy with low acidity, and Darga also roasts to order. The fresher the coffee, the less acidic it becomes. David suggests buying coffee for no more than a week or two. “After that, the coffee acquires a musty, earthy taste as some of the off the shelf varieties,” he advises.
Darga runs his roasting operations in a sustainable manner by using used coffee grounds for gardening; coffee packaging made of biodegradable paper and coffee roasting done in batches that conserve energy.
Another important quality that makes Harvest Café stand out is David’s passion in giving back to the community. Harvest Café offers his product for fundraising activities by selling it to local organizations below wholesale prices. David has also dedicated his time to managing the Abundant Life Church local farmers market for the past six years. The market is located at 82nd and Hague, and is open every Thursday from 4–7 p.m. from June 3 to September 30. His ten-year-old son Billy helps dad set up and sell at the farmers market.
Buying coffee from local cafes, markets and co-ops is the final link in a sustainable coffee system. You can buy Harvest Café coffee at a number of local stores. Harvest Cafe coffee is available at Mama Bears and Jonas Market or through Farm Fresh Delivery, as well as online at www.harvestcafecoffee.com. Alternatively, you can stop by the Harvest Café showroom to sample the broad range of coffees and teas.
