Brooks School Elementary teacher Mark Heiden is preparing for a trip to the Middle East from December 9-22 as part of the Educators to Saudi Arabia Program. “I think this should be a very good opportunity for my students to learn about Saudi Arabia and the Middle East while I experience it,” said Heiden.
He will share his experiences with his students and school through a blog at http://mrheiden.blogspot.com/ He also plans to call his class at least a couple of times during the trip to talk about what he is learning and to answer some of their longer questions from the blog. With an eight-hour time difference, he could call his class in the morning here before he goes to bed in the evening there.
“I am excited for the chance to go and see the land that is the birthplace of Islam and to learn about this modern country first hand,” said Heiden. “Then, I can’t wait to share this new knowledge and some gathered artifacts with my students and colleagues.”
The Educators to Saudi Arabia Program offers professional development opportunities for U.S. educators to expand their knowledge and understanding of Saudi Arabia and to share this new understanding with their students, colleagues and communities.
Heiden is one of 25 participants selected from across the country for the fully-funded, 10-day study tour that focuses on education, science and technology, history as well as culture. During the visit, participants hear from experts in each of the theme areas and visit elementary and secondary schools, areas of cultural and historical significance and modern industrial facilities. Upon returning to the U.S., participants will implement an interdisciplinary impact plan drawing on their program experiences.
