Having been born without any fingers on one hand, people are amazed at this accomplished trombone player. Robert Slemenda, born in South Korea, has been amazing his family and friends since he first picked up the trombone in 6th grade. Now one of the best trombonists in the state, Robert has not let his physical challenges hold him back.
Robert began playing 7 years ago just for fun, and it has now developed into a love of music. Throughout high school, Robert has been a strong leader in the Marching Band, Jazz Band, Show Band, and Concert Band. Robert has also been a member of the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra, a branch of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, for 4 years. Robert has held many leadership roles throughout his high school career. Don Lain, Robert’s band director, says, “Robert is a leader by example. He is a principal player… an active section leader and [band] captain at LNHS.”
Having developed a passion for the arts over the past several years, Robert is a strong advocate for arts in the schools. Through band, Robert has been able to express himself in ways he might not have otherwise had. Well behaved and quiet in the classroom, Robert takes control and exudes leadership in his band activities. Marilyn Slemenda, Roberts mother says, “He was a quiet and shy kid, but through involvement in band, he has blossomed!”
Never letting his physical disabilities hold him back, Robert is a great role model. Not only has he dedicated himself to music, while at Lawrence North, he has not let his academics go either. Always taking every assignment tossed his way; he maintains exceptional grades in the classroom. Robert’s determination to succeed in school and his strength to persevere was recently rewarded. He was named second place recipient of the “National Annual Achievement Award” from Club Z! Tutoring Services. Maggie Schilling, the area director for Club Z! Tutoring, said, “Robert’s strength and determination to maintain nearly perfect grades as well as an active passion for the arts, is the reason he was named the second place recipient of the Annual Achievement Award.” Don Lain, Robert’s Band Director and Lawrence North’s Department Chair, nominated Robert for this award based on his strong leadership, character and perseverance to succeed. Lain says, “Robert demonstrates strong character always…and does his best at all he does… he has always been a great role model for his peers.”
The Annual Achievement is given once in the fall and again in the spring. The second place winner receives $1000 from Club Z! for higher education. Robert will be able to use his award to pay for room and board, books, supplies, and/or tuition. Robert will be attending University of Indianapolis in the fall where he will be majoring in Music. Robert’s goal is to graduate from University of Indianapolis, and continue his love of music by playing the trombone professionally. Now 18, Robert has created a bright path for himself. Because of his hard work and determination, he will be able to fully utilize his university studies and move on to a successful career. Congratulations, Robert!
