With a goal to improve the overall safety and security conditions at our front entryway, your Admirals Landing Board has approved a project designed to meet these needs.

This project has two parts. First, make certain changes to our landscaping as we remove the large, overgrown pear trees in the center island. At present, these trees block site lines as you prepare to leave and enter our neighborhood. Secondly, the installation of a double-light, elevated security lamp on top of the 10′ high brick column on the north end of the center island.

This solution should greatly improve driver visibility as vehicles leave from or arrive to our neighborhood at 86th Street—particularly when it’s dark. An added bonus of removing the current trees is that they won’t block the new light path that will be cast over the entryway center island, thereby getting full usage of this new light source.

The Bradford Pear trees will be replaced with 8′ (approximate height) slower growth spruce trees. Our hope is that this entire front entryway project, with improved safety at its core, will actually create a more visually appealing entrance to your neighborhood that even during the daytime, may even appear larger and more open.

The project will commence this week and barring anything unforeseen, we expect to have it completed before the Daylight Savings Time change takes place on Sunday, November 1.

As our contractors begin the work of tree removal, disposal and replacement, as well as the lighting installation, please be mindful of them and exercise caution as you enter and leave our neighborhood. The speed limit is still 25 MPH in our neighborhood.

Mark your calendars now for Tuesday, November 10th. More details soon so please check back.

National Night Out in Admirals Landing

What is National Night Out? It’s America’s Night Out Against Crime! COL-NNO-Logo2

The “26th Annual National Night Out” (NNO), a unique crime & drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), is on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. We cordially ask you and your family to be an active participant as Admirals Landing steps up and lets everyone know that our neighborhood is organized in our efforts against crime.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated in NNO 2008. Let’s add to that number by having a great turnout right here in Admirals Landing.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

  • Promote community awareness and active involvement in creating safer neighborhoods;
  • Generate support for and participation in local programs to prevent crime, drug abuse and violence;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and build on our police-community partnerships;
  • Sends a message to criminals letting them know that our neighborhood is organized and fighting back!

When: Tuesday, August 4th, 2009
Where: Admirals Landing Pool and throughout the neighborhood
When: The event is from 5:30 PM – 11:00 PM and during that time there is an NNO meeting at the Pool from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
Scheduled to attend: Lawrence Mayor Paul Ricketts; City of Lawrence Crime Watch Coordinator, Sgt. Tom Ashcraft; the Lawrence Police Department’s bike patrol, K-9, SWAT vehicle, motorcycle patrol and Lawrence Fire Department fire engines and firefighters.

Please join in making Admirals Landing a safer neighborhood!

What Else Can I Do?

  • Make certain that your outdoor lights are in proper working order and that your home’s windows and doors are secure.
  • Review the Admirals Landing Crime Watch page from our ALHOA website, for relevant, common sense tips about keeping your home and neighborhood safe from crime.
  • Talk with your children, family, friends and neighbors about the importance of being aware and observant of their surroundings.

Then on Tuesday August 4th, help create a heightened sense of awareness and neighborhood spirit by joining us at the Pool from 6:00 – 8:00 PM to meet with the ALHOA Crime Watch Chair, Susan Kehlenbrink, Lawrence Mayor Paul Ricketts, Crime Watch Coordinator Tom Ashcraft and other public safety officials.

Additionally, during NNO we encourage you to do the following:

  • Turn your front porch lights on at 5:30 PM and keep them on all night long.
  • After dark and in small groups, take a “flashlight walk” through our neighborhood.
  • Look for front yard lamps that aren’t on, open garage doors, cars on driveways with the windows down or unlocked, and anything else that could lead to a “crime of opportunity”.
  • If a yard lamp is out, leave a note in the mailbox.
  • Should a garage door appear to have been left open or a car has the windows down or appears unlocked, ring the door bell and let your neighbor know of this.

Be vigilant and get involved. It’s your neighborhood!

City of Lawrence Recycling Program

The City of Lawrence provides bi-weekly curbside recycling pickup. This section contains detailed information about curbside recycling, ToxDrops, recycling for businesses, and recycling drop-off sites for residents.

2009 Recycle Schedule (90k PDF)

Curbside Collection for Residential Customers

Each private residence served by the City of Lawrence Sanitation Department may participate in the recycling program. To participate, simply take a large plastic trash container or any other type of sturdy container, mark it “Recycle” in large letters with permanent marker or paint, and use it as your recycling bin. Recycling containers should be set apart from your trash so that our city collectors don’t confuse the two.

The following list contains the items that may be placed in your bin.

  • # 1 plastics – such as soda bottles, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter containers
  • #2 plastics – such as milk jugs & detergent bottles  Glass jars & bottles – clear, brown & green
  • Aluminum beverage containers
  • Steel beverage & food containers
  • Newspapers & magazines
  • Corrugated cardboard & press board such as cereal boxes (Please flatten all boxes)
  • Newspapers, magazines, junk mail & white paper. All of these items are to be bundled & tied or placed in brown paper bogs that are then to be set on top of all other items in your bin – to keep items from flying out of your bins on windy days.

Please remove lids from plastics and glass containers and rinse all containers so as not to attract insects or animals.

Recycling is picked up on normal trash days, every other week. The recycling calendar can be picked up at the Lawrence Government Building.

Bins are the property of the City of Lawrence and should be left with a residential property when occupancy changes.

Yard Waste Composting

Between Oct. 1 & Nov. 31 clean yard waste can be left at the curb for composting. Please use recyclable paper yard waste bags -available at most grocery & hardware stores

Apartment, Condo and Mobile Home Dwellers

If you would like to recycle and your neighborhood is not served by the City you can drop your recyclables off at the Marsh parking lot at Oaklandon and Fox Road, or the Kroger parking lot at Pendleton Pike and Sunnyside.

Recyclables accepted at these sites include:

  • # 1 plastics – such as soda bottles, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter containers
  • #2 plastics – such as milk jugs & detergent bottles
  • Glass jars & bottles – clear, brown & green
  • Aluminum beverage containers
  • Steel beverage & food containers
  • Newspapers & magazines
