On a sultry Wednesday evening, Admirals Landing residents gathered at the pool to meet with  Admirals Landing residentsrepresentatives of Lawrence. The topic, of course, was how to reduce crime in Admirals Landing. For those of you unable to attend, it was a spirited and enthusiastic group, all sharing common goals of increasing safety and reducing crime in Admirals Landing.

Among those attending in an official capacity was Lawrence City Councilman David Freeman. David has been working to expedite the process of getting “Stop” signs at the intersection just south of the pool, thus reducing traffic speed around the pool. Additionally, he’s exploring whether a crosswalk can be added, further increasing the safety of pedestrians around the pool. Mayor Paul Ricketts demonstrated his support —  and concern — spending more than an hour with us, discussing safety issues and what we can do, and what we can expect from the City of Lawrence. In addition to the many patrol car and bicycle officers who attended, Lawrence Police Department Crime Watch coordinator, Tom Ashcraft offered many sensible tips of things you can do right now to help keep crime away.

LPD

First, eliminate crimes of opportunity. Don’t leave your car doors unlocked. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight, even when you lock your doors. That cell phone, GPS or radar detector presents an easy target for someone looking to make a quick grab.

Second, if you think you see or hear something suspicious, call the police. Don’t worry that it may not be something or it may not be a crime. Just call. Let the police determine if a criminal act is taking place. The police, according to Office Ashcraft, view us as “The eyes and ears of Lawrence Police Department.” LPD realizes they can’t be everywhere. But they are as interested in stopping crime as we are in getting it stopped.

911 in an emergency.

545-7575 for any other call.

A quick word of warning: Now that the speeding problems within Admirals Landing is on the radar, so to speak, of LPD, there will be an increased presence, and likely an increased number of tickets written, in our neighborhood. Remember: the speed limit is 25. Be forewarned. For more information on the City of Lawrence, or the Lawrence Police Department, visit their information-rich website (see the link on this page).

Garbage Sale Our annual Admirals Landing Neighborhood Garage Sale is scheduled for Friday, June 27 & Saturday June 28. The hours for both days are from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (or until you’re outa’ stuff that people will pay you for and will not even take the rest off your hands for free).
